Record-and-playback testing: why it failed and what changed
Why classic record-and-playback tests were brittle, what modern tools do differently, and when codeless test automation makes sense.
Record a flow on your web app and upload the video. AI writes the steps, and ReplayQA plays them back in a real browser before every release. That's the whole setup.
Other test tools ask you to learn a framework, install a recorder or write scripts. With ReplayQA, the only skill you need is recording your screen.
Use the screen recorder you already have. Do one flow on your site the way a user would: sign up, check out, create a record.
Drop the MP4 or WebM onto ReplayQA. No browser plugin, no test framework, nothing to install.
AI watches the video once and writes each click, typed value, choice and date, plus a check for the result you ended on.
ReplayQA plays the steps back in a real browser to prove they work, then saves the test. Press Play before every release.
Then press Play whenever you ship. Every run gives a pass or fail, a screenshot of every step and a video of the run.
Most test automation fails before the first test is written: someone has to learn the tool, write the scripts and keep them working. ReplayQA removes those jobs instead of making them faster.
Make your first testIf you can use your app and record your screen, you can protect it with automated tests.
Record your critical paths once: sign-in, sign-up, checkout, search. Play them all before you ship and know in minutes whether anything broke.
Founders, product managers, support and manual testers can create automated regression tests without writing or reading a line of code.
Keep a project per client site. Check every site after a deploy, a plugin update or a content change, each with its own test logins.
Skip writing and debugging end-to-end test code for the flows that just need to keep working. Tweak any step in a form when you need to.
Test suites usually die from upkeep, not from writing them. These keep yours running.
Every new test is played back on your site in a real browser first. You can watch it live. Only steps that work are saved.
See the frame from your video beside the screenshot from the run, with the reason it failed and where.
When a button was only renamed or moved, ReplayQA proposes the fix as a new draft. Saved tests never change behind your back.
Calendar popups, typed dates, dropdowns with one or several choices, checkboxes, menus and dialogs, all from the video.
Record signing in once. Every other test signs in first, as the account you choose, with logins stored encrypted.
Group tests into suites, run them together before a release, retry only the failures and spot flaky tests.
Hand-written tests are powerful but slow to write. Recorder plugins are fast but brittle. AI agents are quick to start but can behave differently each run. ReplayQA uses AI once, then replays the same proven steps every time.

No. You record a flow working on your site, upload the video, and ReplayQA's AI writes the steps. ReplayQA plays them back in a real browser to prove they work, then saves the test. You can edit any step in a simple form, but you never have to touch code.
Usually a few minutes. Record the flow, upload it, and the AI drafts the steps in about a minute. ReplayQA then plays them back on your site; when every step passes, the test is saved and ready to replay.
A smoke test is a quick check that your most important flows still work after a change, such as signing in, signing up or checking out. In ReplayQA each recorded flow becomes a test. Group them into a suite and press Play All before a release to run them together, with a pass or fail and a screenshot for every step.
No. Any screen recorder works, including the ones built into Windows and macOS, as long as it saves MP4 or WebM. A Chrome extension is available if you'd like to record straight from the browser, but it's optional.
One flow from start to finish, the way a user does it, ending on the result you expect, such as an order confirmation or a saved record. If the address bar is visible, ReplayQA reads the starting page from it; otherwise you type it in.
Any web app you can open in Chrome, whatever it's built with. Every run starts in a fresh browser, so if your app needs an account, you record signing in once and every other test signs in first.
No. AI reads the video once to write the steps. After the test is saved, every replay runs the same saved steps in a real browser, with no AI involved, so results are repeatable and replays never use your AI allowance.
ReplayQA never takes a password from the video. You enter it once; it's stored encrypted for that site and typed in at run time. Passwords are masked in screenshots, videos and logs.
The run fails with your video's frame beside the screenshot from the run, and a plain-English reason. When a button was only renamed or moved, ReplayQA proposes a fix as a new draft; nothing changes until you approve it.
Yes. Native date fields, typed dates and calendar popups are supported, along with dropdowns (including ones that allow several choices), checkboxes, radio buttons, menus and in-page dialogs. Choosing a file to upload isn't supported yet.
Yes. Each project can have staging, production or any other environment, each with its own test logins. Upload a video of a different website and ReplayQA files it under that site automatically.
It doesn't replace exploratory, accessibility, performance or security testing, and it doesn't claim a screenshot proves what's in your database. It automates the checks you can show in a video.
You can try it free: turn one video into a test and replay it, no card needed. Paid plans include saved tests, test runs and AI-analyzed videos each month, and anything beyond that is opt-in and capped by a budget you set.
