Organize tests in folders

Group tests into folders and subfolders by feature or area, file them by selecting or dragging, and run a whole folder from a suite.

As your test library grows, folders keep it easy to find and mark tests. Each project has its own folders, and folders can hold subfolders (up to six levels), for example Checkout / Payments. A test is in one folder, or in none.

Create folders

On Tests, the folder list sits beside your tests.

  • Press New at the top of the folder list to create a folder. When you're looking at all projects, choose which project it belongs to.
  • Open a folder's ⋯ menu for New subfolder, Rename, Move… and Delete folder.

Folder names must be different from the other folders at the same level.

File tests

  • Select and move: tick tests in the list, press Move to folder, and choose the folder. Choose Not in a folder to take tests out of their folder.
  • Drag: drag a test onto a folder in the folder list. If you've ticked several tests, dragging one of them moves them all.
  • From a test's page: under About, pick a folder and press Move.
  • New test from video: while you're looking at a folder, New test from video opens the upload page for it, and the test made from your video goes straight into the folder, last in its order.

A folder holds tests of its own project only.

Browse

Click a folder to see its tests and the tests in its subfolders. Search, status and Flaky only still apply. Not in a folder lists tests that aren't filed yet, and All tests shows everything. In All tests, each filed test shows its folder under its name; click it to open that folder.

Run a folder

Add a folder to a suite and the suite runs every test in it and its subfolders, including tests you file there later. See Suites and Play All.

Set the order of a folder's tests

A folder's tests are in A–Z order until you choose otherwise. To change it, open the folder and choose Set test order (or Set test order… in the folder's ⋯ menu), drag tests into place (or use the ↑ and ↓ buttons), and choose Save order. The folder's page lists its tests in that order, and every suite that includes the folder runs them in it. To see them another way, pick a different Sort. Tests you file into the folder later go last. Each subfolder has its own order and runs after the folder's own tests.

Move or delete a folder

  • Move… puts a folder, with everything in it, inside another folder of the same project or at the top level. Suites that include it are unchanged.
  • Delete folder removes only the folder. Its tests and subfolders move up one level, so nothing is lost. A suite that included it gets its tests as individual tests, so the suite keeps running the same tests.

Folders and tags work together: use folders for where a test belongs (Checkout, Account, Admin) and tags for cross-cutting labels (smoke, slow).
