Uploading a video
How to upload a screen recording to ReplayQA, what each field on the upload page means, and how videos of other websites are handled.
Every test starts with a video. This page walks through the upload form field by field.
Open the upload page
Press New test from video at the top of the sidebar. If you've chosen a project in the project switcher, the upload goes to that project.
If the upload page shows a lock instead of the form, your workspace has reached its plan's saved-test limit or its plan has ended. See Plans, usage and limits.
Choose the file
Drop the video onto the page, or press Choose file. ReplayQA accepts MP4 and WebM. Your plan sets the maximum file size and length; most single-flow recordings are well within them.
The upload shows a progress bar. Keep the tab open until it finishes. Large files are sent in pieces, so a brief network drop doesn't restart the whole upload.
Fill in the details
| Field | What to enter |
|---|---|
| What does the video show? | A short name for the flow, such as "Log in and add an item to the cart". This becomes the test's name. |
| Project | Which website the test belongs to. Hidden if you only have one project. |
| Site | Which copy of the site (for example Staging) the steps are replayed on. Hidden if the project has only one. |
| Page the video starts on (optional) | The full address of the first page in the video. Only needed if the browser's address bar isn't visible in the recording. |
| Sign in as | Who the test signs in as before repeating your video. Shown once the project has a sign-in test. See below. |
Press Upload, ReplayQA does the rest.
Videos that start signed in
Every test runs in a fresh browser that isn't signed in. If your video starts on a page that needs an account, such as a dashboard, the test has to sign in first. Choose how under Sign in as:
| Choice | When to use it |
|---|---|
| The site's sign-in | The default. The test replays the site's sign-in test first. The choice shows which test that is, or says none is set yet. |
| Replay a sign-in test | The flow needs a different account, such as an admin. See Testing more than one role. |
| No sign-in (start signed out) | The video starts on a public page, such as sign-up or pricing. |
Good to know:
- If your video shows you signing in, the choice is skipped: the test signs in by itself.
- You only see Sign in as once the project has a sign-in test. Before that, see Your first video needs an account.
- If the video is filed under another website (see Testing a different website), it uses that website's own sign-in instead.
- If the sign-in test you chose is archived or deleted before the video is analyzed, the test uses the site's sign-in.
- You can change it later under Sign in as on the test's page.
Your first video needs an account
If you don't have a sign-in test yet, either:
- start the video on the sign-in page and sign in on camera. The test signs in by itself, and on the free trial this is the only way, because the trial turns one video into a test; or
- upload a short sign-in video first. Once it passes, it becomes the site's sign-in automatically, and any video that stopped at the sign-in page is tried again, signed in this time.
Testing a different website
If the Page the video starts on is on a website that isn't one of your sites, for example https://portal.example.org when your project is https://shop.example.com, ReplayQA files the video correctly instead of replaying it on the wrong site:
- If another project already has a site at that address, the video goes there.
- Otherwise ReplayQA creates a new project for that website, with a site at that address. (This needs permission to manage projects; otherwise you'll be asked to have an admin add the site first.)
What happens next
After the upload, ReplayQA analyzes the video and builds the test. Continue with From video to validated test.
You'll find every video under Recordings. Open one to watch it, see its status, or open the test it produced.
